They are separate OEM part numbers, but the TN850 is a direct substitute for the TN820 in all compatible Brother printers. If your printer currently uses a TN820, this cartridge will work as a drop-in replacement.
Do I also need to replace the drum unit (DR820)?
Not necessarily. The drum unit (DR820) is a separate component with a much longer lifespan — approximately 30,000 pages versus 8,000 for the TN850 toner. Your Brother printer will display a separate "Drum End Soon" warning when the drum needs replacing. If you'd like to replace both together, we also carry TN850 + DR820 combo packs.
